Abstract:

In this article, I analyze how the Brazilian film “City of God” (Cidade de Deus, 2002), directed by Fernando Meirelles and co-directed by Kátia Lund, strategically captures, manipulates, and transforms the stereotypes of favela inhabitants in Rio de Janiero, Brazil, to formulate an esthetic of violence that transmits the effects of social exclusion in the life of the neofavela.

Key words:

Violence, inequality, exclusion, citizenship, favela, stereotype, Latin American film, City of God, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
